Build Professionals
Student Interaction with the CDO
Student Partnership with the CDO
The primary purpose of the Career Development Office is to assist students in gaining skills and obtaining experiences to enhance their professional development. This is best accomplished through a partnership between each student and the CDO.
In this partnership, the CDO can:
- Empower students with information, resources, and skills training
- Market the quality and characteristics of BYU Law students to employers
- Develop programs and events to assist students in their job search and their acquisition of stronger job search skills
- Provide counseling service to each student
- Acquire state-of-the-art technology to facilitate the job search and professional development
- Collect and report employment data
Each BYU Law student will need to:
- Be in charge of their own job search and professional development
- Determine and develop strengths through self-assessment
- Establish and maintain a professional network
- Gain information through market research and career exploration
- Make decisions regarding career options
- Participate in CDO events and programs
- Diligently and consistently develop job search skills
- Develop and carry out a plan for successful job searching
Career Advisors
Each BYU Law student is formally assigned to a Career Advisor for individual mentorship and career coaching. Each Career Advisor is an attorney with experience in the practice of law.
Career Advisors want to assist each student to gain skills, grow professionally, and find a job that is a good fit. We recommend that students meet with their Career Advisor at least once per semester; however, each Career Advisor will meet with any student as often as that student would like. In our experience, Career Advisors are better able to assist students who meet more frequently with their Career Advisor.
A student can make an appointment with any Career Advisor through LINX. You are permitted to meet with any Advisor, but one-off meetings with a different Career Advisor will not alter the formal Career Advisor assignments. We encourage students to keep their assigned Career Advisor informed of career development insights or information gained from meetings with other Career Advisors.
Milestones Course
Milestones is a one-of-a-kind professional development course for all first-year and transfer students at BYU Law School. It equips students with lifelong leadership and professional development skills to support their short and long-term career planning. Through the Milestones course, students increase in self-awareness, confidence, and ownership of their professional development. They are coached on how to build natural, intentional relationships with professionals. They also learn about various legal practice areas, employment types, and summer internship opportunities available to law students.
