1L Summer Timeline / Information

Diversity Programs: Many Biglaw law firms have diversity programs which provide 1L diverse students with an opportunity to work at a Biglaw law firm. Many of these applications open in late November or early December of the 1L school year.
OCI: A few firms, particularly those with a Salt Lake City office, participate in the BYU Law School On Campus Interview Program, which typically occurs during February of the 1L school year.
Other Applications: A growing number of Biglaw law firms accept applications on their website, and these typically open late in the 1L fall semester or early in the 1L winter semester.
Application Materials: Cover letter (typical for non-Diversity Program applications) or personal statement (almost always required for Diversity Program applications), resume, law school transcript, writing sample (often, but not always), references (sometimes, but not always).
Interview Timing: Usually in late January and early February, most interviews have only a single round, but some will have a screening interview followed by call-back interviews at the location of the employer.
Timing of Job Offers: From January through March (usually shortly after the interview).

2L Summer Timeline / Information

Early Resume Collect and OIC Programs: Jobs with Biglaw law firms are typically obtained through the BYU Law School Early Resume Collect Program or On-Campus Interview Program.
Online Applications: More Biglaw law firms are choosing not to participate in the Early Resume Collect or OCI programs and rather to accept applications online through their websites.
Early Resume Collect Application Timing: Early Resume Collect applications for individual law firms typically open in May or June. The applications for individual law firms will close starting in mid-June, but some law firms will wait until early in July. Applications should be submitted as soon as 1L winter grades are available.
OCI Application Timing: OCI applications typically open shortly after end of 1L winter semester and close in early-to-mid-July. Applications should be submitted as soon as 1L winter grades are available. OCI interviews occur during the OCI period, typically starting in the second week of August. Because most interviews are in person on campus, students wishing to participate should plan to be on campus during the OCI period.
Online Applications Timing: Online applications typically open in April or May of the 1L winter semester. Applications should be submitted as soon as 1L winter grades are available.
Application Materials: Cover letter, resume, law school transcript, writing sample (often, but not always), references (sometimes, but not always).
Screening Interview Timing
- Early Resume Collect screening interviews for a law firm will occur within one to two weeks after the deadline for that law firm’s resume collect.
- OCI screening interviews occur during the OCI period on campus or virtually, typically starting in the second week of August.
- Online application screening interviews typically occur within one to two weeks after applications are submitted (unless the online applications state that no interviews will start until after a deadline, in which case, they will be one to two weeks after that deadline).
Callback Interview Timing
- Callback interviews are often combined with the screening interview for Early Resume Collect applications. However, a growing number of the screening interviews are virtual, followed by callback interviews that are either virtual or in person.
- Invitations for callback interviews are typically made seven to ten days after the screening interviews for OCI and online applications.
Timing of Job Offer: Typically made within seven to ten days after the callback interview.

3L or Graduate Timeline / Information

Very Few Jobs: Biglaw law firms typically do not hire 3L law students because their new associate classes are filled with 2L summer interns or associates.
Early Resume Collect, OCI, and Online Applications: Firms hiring 3Ls for post-graduate positions will typically accept online applications, but on occasion, will participate in Early Resume Collect or OCI programs.
Early Resume Collect Application Timing: Early Resume Collect applications for individual law firms typically open in May or June. The applications for individual law firms will close starting in mid-June, but some law firms will wait until early in July. Applications should be submitted as soon as 2L winter grades are available.
OCI Application Timing: OCI applications typically open shortly after end of 2L winter semester and close early in July. Applications should be submitted as soon as 2L winter grades are available.
